Understanding the Types of Hajj

There are three recognised ways of combining Hajj and Umrah. Consult a qualified scholar to decide which applies to your situation.

Tamattu’

Performing Umrah first during the Hajj season, exiting ihram, then entering ihram again later for Hajj alone.

Qiran

Combining the intentions of Umrah and Hajj together in a single, continuous ihram.

Ifrad

Performing Hajj alone, without combining it with Umrah in the same journey.

Scholars differ on some details between these forms. This page does not state that one form is universally preferred — ask a qualified scholar for guidance specific to you.
