Jumu‘ah is the congregational prayer held at midday on Friday. It takes the place of Zuhr for those who attend. It consists of a sermon (khutbah) followed by two rak‘ahs prayed in congregation.

The Qur’anic basis

Surah al-Jumu‘ah (62:9–10), quoted below, calls the believers to hasten to the remembrance of Allah when the call to prayer is made on Friday, to leave off trade, and, when the prayer is finished, to disperse in the land and seek Allah’s bounty.

Etiquette from the hadith

  • Salman al-Farsi reported that the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever bathes on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, uses oil or perfume, goes to the prayer without separating two people sitting together, prays what has been written for him, and then stays silent while the imam gives the sermon, will be forgiven his sins between that Friday and the previous one (Sahih al-Bukhari 883).
  • Abu Hurayrah reported a similar teaching about performing wudu well, coming to the Friday prayer, listening and keeping silent, and that whoever touched the pebbles (fidgeted) caused an interruption (Sahih Muslim 857).

Who it is for

Jumu‘ah is generally taught as obligatory for adult, sane, resident Muslim men who are able to attend. It is not obligatory for women, children, travellers or the sick, though women may attend where the mosque allows and their attendance is valid according to the majority. Anyone who does not pray Jumu‘ah prays Zuhr instead.

“O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.”

Surah Al-Jumu'a (62) — 62:9

Hadith

Hadith

Narrated Salman-Al-Farsi:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven."

Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 883 .

Hadith

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:He who performed ablution well, then came to Friday prayer, listened (to the sermon), kept silence all (his sins) between that time and the next Friday would be forgiven with three days extra, and he who touched pebbles caused an interruption.

Scholarly notes

Bathing on Friday: a report in Sahih al-Bukhari (858) says that bathing on Friday is “compulsory” for every adult. The majority of scholars understand this as a strongly emphasised recommendation, while a minority take it as literally obligatory. Quorum: the number of worshippers required for a valid Jumu‘ah is itself a matter of difference between the schools (figures such as three, twelve and forty are found), so follow the practice of your local mosque and school. Other details, such as the exact time and the number of sermons, are also treated differently in the schools.

FAQ

What if I cannot attend Jumu‘ah?

You pray Zuhr as usual. If you missed Jumu‘ah without an excuse, sincerely seek forgiveness and make attending a priority.

Can women pray Jumu‘ah?

It is not obligatory for women. Where a mosque allows women to attend, their prayer is valid according to the majority of scholars; otherwise they pray Zuhr at home.
