The funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) is offered for a deceased Muslim. It is a communal obligation (fard kifayah): if enough people pray, the obligation is fulfilled on behalf of the community. Death is a reality every soul will taste (3:185, quoted below), and the funeral prayer is a duty of care that the living owe to the dead.

What the reports say

  • Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ informed the people of the death of the Negus (an-Najashi) on the day he died, went to the prayer ground, and the people stood in rows behind him. He said four takbirs (Sahih al-Bukhari 1245).
  • Auf ibn Malik reported the Prophet’s supplication for a deceased person, asking Allah to forgive him, have mercy on him, make his grave spacious, admit him to the Garden, and protect him from the torment of the grave and the Fire (Sahih Muslim 963).
  • Abu Hurayrah reported that whoever attends the funeral until he prays over the deceased receives a reward of one qirat, and whoever stays until the burial receives two qirats, like two great mountains (Sahih al-Bukhari 1325).

The outline

The prayer is prayed standing, in rows, without ruku‘ or sujud. In outline there are four takbirs. Between them the worshipper glorifies Allah, sends blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, and makes du’a for the deceased and for the Muslims, and then ends with the salam. Preparing the body (washing and shrouding) and burial are separate duties not covered in this lesson.

Qur’an

Qur’an

“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.”

Surah Aal-i-Imraan (3) — 3:185

Hadith

Hadith

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) informed (the people) about the death of An-Najashi on the very day he died. He went towards the Musalla (praying place) and the people stood behind him in rows. He said four Takbirs (i.e. offered the Funeral prayer)

Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1245 .

Hadith

Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1325 .

Hadith

Jubair b. Nufair says:I heard it from 'Auf b. Malik that the Prophet (ﷺ) said prayer on the dead body, and I remembered his prayer:" O Allah! forgive him, have mercy upon him, give him peace and absolve him. Receive him with honour and make his grave spacious; wash him with water, snow and hail. Cleanse him from faults as Thou wouldst cleanse a white garment from impurity. Requite him with an abode more excellent than his abode, with a family better than his family, and with a mate better than his mate. Admit him to the Garden, and protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of the Fire." ('Auf bin Malik) said: I earnestly desired that I were this dead body.

Scholarly notes

What is recited: the schools differ on some of the details. In the Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools, al-Fatihah is recited after the first takbir; in the Hanafi school the first takbir is followed by an opening praise of Allah instead; and in the Maliki school the emphasis is on the supplication. The wording of the du‘a also varies among the reports. Praying for an absent person: the Prophet ﷺ prayed for the Negus in his absence (Sahih al-Bukhari 1245). The Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools permit funeral prayer in absentia in general, while the Hanafi and Maliki schools take that report to be specific to the Negus. Follow your school or local teacher.
