Some of the simplest sunnahs are the short words the Prophet (peace be upon him) said at ordinary moments of the day: waking up, going to the toilet, leaving and entering the house, and going in and out of the mosque. Each one takes a few seconds, and together they turn an ordinary day into a day of remembering Allah.

This lesson gathers those moments in the order they usually happen. Learn one at a time. The meaning matters first; learn the Arabic pronunciation from a teacher or a trusted recording rather than from the transliteration alone.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to learn every dua in one week. Pick one moment, such as leaving home, and keep it for a week before adding the next.
  • Saying the toilet dua after going in. The report describes it being said when the Prophet (peace be upon him) went to relieve himself, so say it before you enter.
  • Treating the transliteration as the real text. The Arabic is the wording that was taught. The English letters are only a reading aid.
  • Thinking a dua only counts if it is long. Several of these are a single short phrase, and entering the house only asks you to remember Allah.

Key points

  • On waking: praise Allah for giving life back after sleep (Sahih al-Bukhari 6312).
  • Before the toilet, seek refuge with Allah; after leaving it, ask for His forgiveness.
  • Leaving home: "Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'ala Llah..." places your day in Allah's care.
  • Entering home: remember Allah as you come in and before you eat (Sahih Muslim 2018).
  • Mosque: ask for mercy on entering and for Allah's bounty on leaving (Sahih Muslim 713).

Practical steps

  1. Put the waking dua where you see it first thing, for example next to your bed or as your phone lock-screen text.
  2. Say the toilet dua at the door, before going in, and "Ghufranak" as you come out.
  3. Say the leaving-home dua at the door, with your keys in your hand.
  4. When you come home, say Bismillah as you step in, and again before you eat.
  5. At the mosque, say the dua for mercy as you go in and the dua for Allah's bounty as you leave.
