A journey has its own set of supplications: on leaving the house, on boarding, during the trip, when you stop, and on the way home. The core travel supplication comes straight from the Qur'an, from Surah Az-Zukhruf, chapter forty-three, verses thirteen and fourteen. The Arabic of each is shown on this page; this narration gives the meaning. On leaving the house, on any occasion, not only for travel, there is a supplication whose meaning is: “In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah; there is no power and no strength except with Allah.” It is in Sunan Abi Dawud, graded authentic by al-Albani, and the narration says that the one who says it is guided, sufficed and protected. On settling into the vehicle at the start of a journey, the Prophet, peace be upon him, would first declare Allah's greatness three times, and then say the travel supplication, recorded in Sahih Muslim. Its meaning is: “Glory be to Him who has placed this under our control; we could not have done it ourselves, and to our Lord we shall return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from a distressing sight, and from an evil turn of events in wealth and family.” When you stop, or camp at a place, there is a supplication whose meaning is: “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.” The narration in Sahih Muslim says nothing will harm you until you leave that place. And on the way home, repeat the travel supplication and add words whose meaning is: “We return, repentant, worshipping, and praising our Lord.” The travel supplication fits any journey by vehicle. Scholars differ on what counts as travel for rulings such as shortening the prayer, but the supplication itself can be said on any trip. And use the journey for your own personal prayers too: the Prophet said that the supplication of a traveller is one of three that are answered, in a report in Sunan at-Tirmidhi.
